Two Suitcases and a Dream

Complexity and Nuance in a Divided World,
an immigrant story of pain, persistence and patriotism.
Being a first-generation immigrant means carrying a myriad of expectations and burdens—those of family, culture, and faith—yet it is also defined by an immense and enduring sense of hope. Being a psychotherapist and social worker means deeply caring for others and striving to be an agent of positive change. But what happens when your world and your ideals begin to collide with the very thing you thought you were fighting for? What happens when you begin to feel invisibilized yourself?

I wrote this book because I was compelled to speak and to take part in the healing process in today’s deeply polarized world. There is no perfect place. There is no perfect country. But for me, America is home—my imperfectly perfect place. It is where I feel a deep sense of belonging and where I have blossomed into the person I was always meant to be.

Part memoir and part social commentary, this book shares my life story of pain and healing. From the depths of despair to the overflowing presence of love and joy, I have come to believe that we can all be renewed and restored to wholeness, given the right conditions. I sincerely hope that my story will connect us, deepen our understanding of ourselves and one another, and help us relate to the world with greater compassion—rather than perpetuating further divides. I pray it will remind us of the immense power within us, even in the face of imperfect systems and flawed policies.

May you move through this world with grace, compassion and endless curiosity.

Much love,
Cecille
